SYMPOSIUM: The Flag Raising

This is an image that has been reproduced around the World hundreds of thousands of times. It was taken in Iwo Jima; the first piece of Japanese soil taken by the Americans during the Second World War. It is seen as a representation of strength and courage within the American army, and as such has been reproduced as a War memorial statue in Washington DC to commemorate the strength of the Country. To capture this mountaintop it took a four day bloody battle between the two armies, which is something that has been forgotten through this image. This is a memory of a Country and of the World, however should the photograph have been taken by a Japaneese photographer, a different story would be told.
